Fixed Term Contracts: An exploration of employment conditions in Japanese universities

This study looks at current employment practices and terms in the field of tertiary education Japan. The importance this is highlighted by growing prominence “academic underclass” (Itakura, 2021), or university teachers who are undervalued underappreciated their employer turn lacking motivation fearful lack job security. research focuses particularly on international Japan, hired under FTCs (Fixed Term Contracts). significance drawn from securing a strong steady teaching staff, can be foundation which quality assured. findings based upon qualitative data collected semi-structured interview with native Japanese staff member university, whose opinions experiences offer clear insight into impact have employees universities. also triangulated existing studies contemporary journalism. These point to potential dangers drawbacks universities Japan viewing as an expense instead asset.
